The Brief:

To create a rear garden for a new build house that was left as open soil with no lawn and a small ammount paving only. The garden needed to be contemporary and simple in nature with a crisp finish.

Planting was to be low in maintenance along with a specific desire not to have any lawn.

The Garden:

Borrowing slightly from contemporary Japanese garden design, open areas of white granite gravel and paving gave way to islands of trees and blocks of planting.

A main patio sits near the house capturing the best of the sun ready to house a sofa set and table and chairs.

The planting is a mix of structural grasses peppered with purple, pink and white flowers throughout most of the season. The dominating fence line was painted to tie together the colour pallet of the garden.

Three large Acer Osakazuki trees step down the garden set on slightly raised islands above the gravel. This over time will form a canopy over the gravel areas that are a direct replacement for lawn.
