Bolton Yard: Client Brief
Courtyard Garden with sugi ban screens.
Bolton Yard
The Brief:
This garden was to have a contemporary, bright feel in what was a shaded, L-shaped spot. The space was to have separate areas to eat and entertain with the rest of the garden dedicated to planting and retention of spectacular mature Acer trees. Particular focus was to be on dealing with access to the seating areas, garage, gate and side paths while keeping a cohesive space.
The Garden:
Bright contemporary porcelain paving and rendered walling was partnered with a light buff gravel to form a neutral backdrop for the planting. The garden featured two separate seating areas. The first was focused on lounging and breakfast whilst the second on evening and eating. Tying it together was a long retaining wall and linear beds of planting. In spring, the planting colours were light and bright focusing on whites and pastel tones. As the season moves on, hotter more colourful displays are present through the grasses. Shady areas are rich and lush with green. The use of lighter materials and plants lifted the space brightening the garden and interior of the house. At night, a lighting scheme focusing on the planting created ambience to sit within. The final garden was simple and effective.
